Your Story Matters: Storytelling for Veterans

TEACHING ARTIST: KaTHRYN Tran
8 SESSIONS >> Thursdays, 8/1-9/19 FROM 4-6PM PDT

Online

In "Your Story Matters," we'll bridge the gap that makes veteran stories feel untellable. This class merges writing preparation with the 5-minute spoken/performance storytelling style found in competitions like The Moth. This class is designed for those seeking the connection and camaraderie of sharing experiences with veteran peers.

First, we will learn a basic guide for storytelling structure and techniques to help translate our unique experiences into a universal language that can be shared with anyone. Then we will spend time working through public speaking exercises and story ideas. This class will culminate with the application of everything learned into an opportunity for each participant to share their story with the group.

Introduction to Music and Beginning Theory

We will listen to different musical scores that explemify various elements. Musicians and music lovers welcome!

ONLINE FRIDAY WORKSHOPS

DRAWING STILL LIFES

TEACHING ARTIST: DONNA TOUTH’LE BAKER
2 SESSIONS >> FRIDAYS, 8/30 + 9/6 FROM 1-3PM PDT

This is a great workshop for those who enjoy drawing. During each of our two sessions, we will observe a different still life, and you will utilize whatever materials you have on hand such as pencils, markers, pens, or other supplies to capture the likeness of our still life and/or be inspired by it. Participants are invited to use their imagination to elevate the ordinary into extraordinary utilizing skills they will develop with instruction from the teacher. This workshop involves careful observation, a time to slow down and concentrate on the still life (connecting with a piece of art history), and opportunity to have fun in the process.

FINDING YOURSELF IN MUSIC

TEACHING ARTIST: STUART ZOBEL
2 SESSIONS >> FRIDAYS, 9/13 + 9/20 FROM 1-3PM PDT

ONLINE

What do Jimi Hendrix, Charles Bukowski, Joni Mitchell, Shakespeare, Miles Davis, Van Gogh, Bach, and Beethoven have in common? A strong personal voice. We all have things that make us unique, the way we pronounce certain words,  the length of pauses between certain words when we speak - millions of little 'fingerprints' that make us who we are. This workshop will dive into the world of music and help us identify what it is about certain genres or styles that draws us in and keeps us listening. Through lectures and listening, we will continue to develop our own personal voice and taste preferences in our life-long music appreciation journey.
