FOUND FASHION FOUR-WEEK WORKSHOPS

Costume on Tony Miles (left) by Katy Flynn’s Found Fashion class, 2023

Phoenix Rising: Found Fashion

TEACHING ARTIST: Katherine Flynn
4 sessions >> Tuesdays, 10/8 to 10/29 FROM 4–6PM

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

Together we will be working on two costumes for the Art for All Ball inspired by the transformative nature of a phoenix. A phoenix is a mythical bird renowned for its cycle of regeneration and rebirth. It is often depicted with vibrant plumage in fiery colors such as red, gold, and orange, symbolizing its connection to the sun and fire. According to legend, the phoenix lives for hundreds of years before it is consumed by flames, reduced to ashes, only to rise anew from the embers reborn. In this class, you'll receive hands-on demonstrations on deconstructing and reinventing fabric scraps, shoulder pads, and other materials to transform them into feathers, creating a vibrant textured gown.

Join us for this rewarding and creative experience, and see your work shine on the runway at the Art for All Ball! High-attendance participants will receive a free ticket to this fall fundraiser event.

Zero Waste Found Fashion Workshop

Costume by Janelle Abbott’s Found Fashion class, 2023

TEACHING ARTIST: Janelle Abbott
4 sessions >> Wednesdays, 10/9 to 10/30 FROM 3:30–5:30PM

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

Together we will be making a collaborative costume for one of Path with Art's model at the fall fundraiser, the Art for All Ball. We will also be reusing materials to divert them from the landfill to transform them into a costume. We may use fabric or deconstruct objects like handbags or shoes to make a garment. We may also use discarded house paint, spray paint, or nail polish on fabric to bring color and pattern into the look. We will have fun experimenting in a supportive environment with hands-on demonstrations. Join us! No prior sewing experience needed, just a willingness to experiment and have fun.

Participants who have high attendance in this class will be invited to the fall fundraiser, our Art for All Ball, on a free ticket.

We'll cover some basics of sewing, including how to choose fabrics, thread, and notions as we work on our costume. You may be drawing, painting, embellishing, sewing, weaving (and more) to support the finished costume. No prior sewing experience needed.

EXPLORING ALCOHOL INK WORKSHOP

Ambassador TEACHING ARTIST: Bean Fairbanks
1 SESSION >> FRIDAY, 10/18 FROM 2-4PM PDT

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

Join this fun and exploratory workshop on using alcohol inks! Alcohol ink is a rather inexpensive art material that dries quickly on non-porous surfaces and can create stunning abstract designs. You can layer, bleed, and manipulate the inks to achieve beautiful, unpredictable effects. If you have ever been frustrated using a paintbrush, I encourage you to try this and let the colors flow!

Halloween Hanging Door Decoration Workshop

TEACHING ARTIST: Jennifer Levi
1 SESSION >> FRIDAY, 10/25 FROM 2-4PM PDT

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

As Halloween and the spooky season approaches, we invite you to transform common household items to make a door knocker/hanging decoration.  Using string, small bells, googly eyes, charms, and more, we will decorate a small door hanger. We hope that our door decorations provide some fun this Halloween season (and that the jingle wards off evil spirits).

If you choose to dress up, Halloween costumes are welcome!

The Anatomy of Gardening Workshop

AMBASSADOR TEACHING ARTIST: ShÄnda de Anda
1 SESSION >> FRIDAY, 11/1 FROM 2-4PM PDT

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

In this short workshop, we will create poetry and tend to the garden of your inner world. Using the themes of growth, we will provide "gardening tips" in a metaphorical way to champion self care and self expression through poetry. You will have some writing time during the workshop and we hope you leave feeling more rooted and that using poetry as self care continues to grow on you.

Imaginative Photography Workshop

AMBASSADOR TEACHING ARTISTS: Melody RecktEnwald and Patricia DeHart
1 SESSION >> FRIDAY, 11/8 FROM 2-4PM PDT

ARTHOME | 200 MERCER ST

Hoaxes in photography are as old as photography itself. Before photoshop and digital editing, there were in-camera techniques to produce creative images. In this workshop we will explore how to reproduce common "faked" images using props, perspective, changing shutter speed, and intentional camera movements.

DSLR cameras provided for the workshop. No prior experience needed.

Paper luminaries by Beth Denton

Making Paper Luminaries Art Kit

TEACHING ARTIST: Rachael Androski
MATERIALS MAILED TO PARTICIPANTS

A paper luminary is a decorative lantern made from paper that adds a warm, festive glow to a space. In this art kit, you will make your very own luminary using hand cut and decorated paper. A step-by-step instruction guide will include designs for your luminary from simple cutouts to more detailed patterns. The cut outs create a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. We hope this luminary brightens up your winter!

Sunprinting on Fabric Art Kit

TEACHING ARTIST: Alec Rogers
MATERIALS MAILED TO PARTICIPANTS

Sunprinting (also called solarprinting) is a non toxic way to make art with direct sunlight! In this art kit, you will have everything you need to make your own sunprints on fabric. You can select materials like flowers, leaves, string, or other flat objects on top of light-sensitive fabric that reacts when exposed to sunlight. Your objects will block light while the exposed areas of the fabric turn a beautiful dark color––creating wonderful silhouettes. You can turn your fabric pieces into small handkerchiefs, napkins, hair ties, or frame them and hang on the wall!
