The Drs. Luth M. and Narciso P. Tenorio Endowed Lectureship
Join Seattle University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences for this free public event. This installment of the annual Drs. Luth M. and Narciso P. Tenorio Endowed Lectureship features journalist and author Julia Hotz, whose book “The Connection Cure—The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging,” was the first to chronicle the science and stories of social prescribing.Event Description
Around the world, health care professionals are expanding what it means to treat a patient. Instead of solely pharmaceutical prescriptions, they are offering “social prescriptions”—referrals to non-clinical, community-based activities and resources like painting classes and dance lessons.
This lecture introduces the principles and practice of social prescribing, tracing its origins in the United Kingdom and exploring its growing relevance for health systems in the United States. Learn about the evidence behind social prescribing and the role diverse health professions can play to integrate this model into American health care, as well as the importance of rather than asking “What’s the matter with you?” the importance of asking “What matters to you?”
Prior to the program, guests are invited to enjoy a poster presentation showcasing scholarly work by Seattle University faculty and students.
