Path with Art began as a group of committed volunteers teaching art classes at a homeless shelter in Seattle. After witnessing the life-affirming effects of the creative process in a group setting, founders Laurel Doody and Deborah Blake set out to formalize the program and establish Path with Art as a non-profit organization. Today we are recognized as a unique local organization dedicated to leveraging sustainable partnerships that aid in the delivery of quality arts-based programming to adults working to improve their lives. By bringing together arts organizations, social service providers and artists, we strive to enhance the lives of our community’s most vulnerable citizens. Currently, Path with Art produces 20 classes, facilitates 12 local Access Art outings, and hosts two exhibits celebrating students’ work each year.

Our multi-faceted programming breaks down the traditional barriers that exist in access to arts and culture. Engaging in the creative process, program participants receive respect, gain self-confidence, and connect more deeply to the world around them.

Path with Art takes the excellent work of its social service partners a step further by embracing the concept that food and housing are not enough for adults to regain and maintain stability. Path with Art programs encourage social and emotional development, civic engagement, and the personal growth necessary to help participants to get on the path to a more stable life.

Path with Art students are limited to attending one class per term. Currently, we offer 4 terms – Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and an abbreviated, late Fall “Short Courses” session. We have this policy due to the high demand for our classes and in order to spread the opportunities around to as many people as possible. You may attend as many monthly Access Art events as you’d like, whether you are registered for a class or not.Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5
Path with Art classes are site based. Current sites include: Recovery Café, Plymouth Housing Group, Frye Art Museum, and Providence Vincent House. We are very fortunate to have access to these dignified facilities. You do not need to be a client, resident or member at one of these organizations in order to attend classes at these facilities.Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5
All Path with Art classes are taught by professional Teaching Artists. We pride ourselves on the specialized art instruction our teachers provide. All Path with Art Teaching Artists are practicing artists and experienced educators interested in community building. We are not therapists or mental health professionals.Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5
Just bring an open mind and positive mental attitude. Showing up consistently is the most important part. The classes are free of charge to all eligible participants, and all of the supplies for the duration of the class will be provided.Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5

Since all of our classes are free, we only ask that you make a serious commitment to full attendance of the class. All Path with Art classes are taught in a 4, 6 or 8-week series and we expect students to attend every class unless otherwise excused. There is a high demand for our classes, which means that there are often several people we must put on a wait list to get into our classes. If you have a spot in a class, please make every effort to be there every week.

In addition to commitment to full attendance, we require that all participants must:

  • Practice the values of the Path with Art community which are:
    1. to show respect
    2. to be trustworthy
    3. to embrace the creative process
    4. to encourage growth and self-exploration in self and others

  • Participants gain art instruction in a variety of mediums from local professional artists through classes and workshops.
  • Participants are invited to attend monthly Access Art outings to arts and culture events in the area.
  • Participants are recognized at biannual public exhibits.
  • Participants are supported by caring staff, volunteers and teaching artists to use art as a means of gaining self-awareness, learning art-related skills, encouraging self-expression and for engaging in the community.

Access Art is our monthly community outing to arts or culture events in the area (sometimes we have more than one outing a month). All Access Art events are free to Path with Art community members. Examples of past Access Art events include: trips to see the Seattle Opera, tours to explore new exhibits at area museums, going to check out local artists’ studios, outings to see a local theater production, and much more!Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5
No. It’s great if you are already an artist or have some experience, but it is not required. Our classes are designed to accommodate all levels of experience. Yes. Path with Art has Spring and Fall exhibits each year. Artwork produced in Path with Art classes is eligible to be shown at these exhibits. It is entirely up to you, the artist, whether or not you want to submit your work for the show. Path with Art exhibits are meant to be a celebration of the work produced in our classes and the creative process in general – none of the artwork is sold. The exhibits are held in a community gallery space in Pioneer Square during the First Thursday Art Walk, and are a great place to have your work seen. The Spring 2011 Exhibit had more than 300 people attendees.Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.5

Art making helps me to process my thoughts and the world in general. The work I make is an extension of myself.
