Path with Art classes are led by professional teaching artists from the Northwest region. Our classes provide adults with the opportunity to experience a variety of specialized forms including theater arts, digital photography, painting and creative writing. Our process-focused classes are presented in a manner appropriate for all skill levels.

Path with Art classes are site based. Current sites include: Recovery Café, Plymouth Housing Group, Frye Art Museum, and Providence Vincent House. We are very fortunate to have access to these dignified facilities. You do not need to be a client, resident or member at one of these organizations in order to attend classes at these facilities.

Sumi Painting — REGISTRATION CLOSED

  • Teaching Artist: Lois Yoshida
  • Dates: Every Monday, January 9th – February 27th (8 weeks)
  • Time: 2 – 4 PM
  • Location: Simons Apartment Building | Community Meeting Room 228 | 2119 3rd Avenue (on 3rd between Blanchard & Lenora)
  • Details: Experience the flowing techniques of sumi painting while exploring creative forms of self-expression.  Learn sumi (Japanese for ink) painting basics in this introductory class with a focus on traditional materials, tools, and brush strokes.  Students learn to simplify visual elements by using minimal brush strokes and are encouraged to experiment in expressing their individual interpretations of the subjects presented in class.

Acrylic Painting — REGISTRATION CLOSED

  • Teaching Artist: Pamm Hanson
  • Dates: Every Tuesday, January 10th – February 28th (8 weeks)
  • Time: 2 – 4 PM
  • Location: Frye Art Museum | Education Studio | 704 Terry Avenue (corner of Terry & Cherry on 1st Hill)
  • Details: This class will explore the techniques of working with acrylic paints as applied to the discipline of self-portraiture.  A brief survey of self-portraits in art history will provide familiarity with different approaches employed by artists to represent their own image.  Through drawing exercises we will learn the proportions of the face.  We’ll discuss how a self-portrait reflects one’s personal history.  Using the color wheel, we’ll learn how to mix flesh tones.  Open to all experience levels.

Poetry Writing & Performance Workshop — REGISTRATION CLOSED

  • Teaching Artist: Tara Hardy, Writer in Residence at Richard Hugo House
  • Dates: Every Tuesday, January 10th – February 28th (8 weeks)
  • Time: 2 – 4 PM
  • Location: Richard Hugo House | 1634 11th Avenue (on the east side of Cal Anderson Park at the intersection of Olive St & 11th) | #10 bus stops one block away
  • Details: Honoring a poem in front of an audience is as much of a craft as writing it in the first place. During this experiential workshop we’ll write new poetry every week. We’ll also learn the essential elements of reading work aloud. In addition to language itself, our tools become body, voice, inflection. Bringing sound, rhythm, and intent forward from the page onto the stage can not only be a delightful experience, but also illuminate what is and is not working on the page.

Acting & Movement — REGISTRATION CLOSED

  • Dates: Every Wednesday, January 11th – March 7th (8 weeks) *No class February 22nd
  • Time: 2 – 4 PM
  • Location: Frye Apartments | 1st Floor Community Room | 223 Yesler Way, Seattle 98104 (on Yesler between 2nd & 3rd)
  • Details: Acting & Movement is a class where you get to play!  We use traditional theater exercises and warm ups, improvisation, relaxation, and visualization to get actors to be comfortable with being on stage.  There will be opportunities to work on monologues and scenes, as well as develop your own material.  This class is open to all experience levels.  We’ll work together to create a safe place to explore drama, have fun, and learn to express ourselves.

Digital Photography — REGISTRATION CLOSED

  • Teaching Artist: Adam Doody
  • Dates: Every Friday, January 13th – March 2nd (8 weeks)
  • Time: 2 – 4 PM
  • Location: Recovery Cafe | 2022 Boren Avenue (at the intersection of Boren, Fairview, and Denny)
  • Details: In this class we will explore the history of photography, learn the basics of working with a digital camera, practice the skills needed to create compelling photographs, and have fun.  Assignments will investigate self-portraiture, landscape, cityscape, photojournalism, street photography, lighting, and composition.  If you do not have a digital camera, one will be available for loan during the class.  Open to all experience levels.
